Careers and Life Skills Courses
Careers (10 weeks)
This course will allow students to learn more about various career options. They will assess how
their skills, interests, and values match up with possible careers and begin developing a plan
that will provide them with a solid foundation for achieving their career aspirations. Students will
utilize the Xello program to assess and to explore career options, and to create their personal
Educational Development Plan (EDP).
7th Grade: Learning Styles; Values; Employability Skills; Michigan Career Pathways; Matchmaker
Interest Inventory; Educational Development Plan-(EDP); Research and Compare Careers;
Communication Skills; Personality Characteristics; Kaleidoscope Profile
8th Grade: Entrepreneurship, Self-Assessment; Job Shadow; School Subject and Careers;
Research and Compare Colleges; Job Application; Interview Skills; Update EDP; Green Career
Exploration; Personality Characteristics; Employability Skills
Schools offered:
BCS: 7th and 8th grade
Skills for Living (10 weeks)
Students will be introduced to kitchen safety, measurement, and cooking skills with
opportunities to apply these skills in lab situations. Basic life skills are stressed and include
working cooperatively, caring for equipment, nutrition, and following directions. Other hands-on
projects may be explored depending on the interest of the class.

Skills for Living (semester)
This semester course is designed to give students practical
experiences in food preparation and management as well as other 21stcentury life skills. There is an emphasis on kitchen safety, utilizing
different types of equipment, and kitchen math and measurement. Lab
experiences build upon this knowledge throughout the semester as
students explore a wide variety of recipes and cooking techniques.
Communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and positive social
skills are the building blocks to success in this course.
