Computer Aided Design (semester)
This course is for students interested in engineering drawing and design. Students will be
exposed to a variety of drawing techniques and computer-aided 2-D and 3-D software design
programs to learn the fundamentals of communicating engineering ideas. Students will have the
opportunity to see their ideas and drawings come to life using a 3-D printer and laser cutter.
Students will demonstrate their communication and engineering skills through the development
of a series of projects.
Schools offered:
Berkshire: 7th and 8th grade
Derby: 7th and 8th grade
Engineering Technology (twice a week for one semester)
This elective course is for students who are interested in choosing a path within the world of
Engineering to expand their understanding and skills. Students will have options from energy
conversion activities, design, build & test opportunities, and/or learning about 2D & 3D design
and manufacturing using laser engraving, 3D printing (FFF & SLA), and CNC machining.
Schools offered:
BCS: 6th grade
Design and Engineering Technology (semester)
Design and Engineering Technology class projects and activities are real-world applications that
extend and reinforce the understanding of Science and Math and also help prepare students for
transitioning into the High School Engineering Technology program. Units and topics include
Forces and Motion, Vacuum and Pressure, Instrumentation, Renewable Energy Sources and
Conversion and Computer Simulations.
7th Grade: Aerodynamics and Flight. Students learn how planes are able to fly and how the
design of shapes and surfaces can be used to generate a force. Small groups design, build, test,
and analyze an airfoil in a laboratory wind tunnel.
8th Grade: Electronics, Control Systems & Mechatronics. Students will be actively involved in
creating electromechanical devices using electronic components, breadboards, and
microcontrollers.
Schools offered:
BCS: 7th and 8th grade
