World Language
6th Grade
Students may decide to study world language in middle school. They may select from the
following:
Introduction to Chinese
Introduction to French
Introduction to Spanish
These languages will concentrate on the basic skills of speaking, reading, listening, grammar
writing skills, and cultural awareness. A textbook and/or district created curriculum will be used
accompanied by other supplementary materials.
7th Grade
Students will continue their studies of French, Chinese or Spanish from the sixth grade. A lively
and active conversational approach is used in speaking and understanding the language.
Reading, writing, grammar, and culture is continued.
8th Grade
Students will continue their studies of French, Chinese or Spanish from the seventh grade.
Emphasis will be on continuing the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills,
as well as the understanding of the Chinese, French, or Spanish speaking people and their
culture. NOTE: Students in the full year French and Chinese courses will be expected to enter
Level Two in high school. Spanish students are expected to enter Level Three in high school.
Chinese/French Grades 6-8 = Level One at BPS High Schools
Spanish Grades 6-8 = Level One and Two at BPS High Schools
World Language Level One
These courses are designed for students who may or may not have studied a language and/or
have limited experience. They develop entry-level skills in speaking/expressive communication,
listening/receptive skills, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on interpretive abilities. They
also foster an early understanding of the culture. Students will be able to understand and to ask
simple questions on structured, familiar topics. They can only satisfy a small number of
immediate needs. Discourse is usually limited to the present tense. (It is understood that BPS
Spanish students may come with some prior experience.)
