6th Grade Language Arts
In 6th Grade Language Arts, students will engage in an integrated study that enhances their
reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and direction-following abilities. Emphasizing the
analysis and synthesis of information, the course aims to boost students' independent reading
skills while advancing their proficiency in various writing genres, including informational,
narrative, and argumentative. Lessons on grammar and mechanics will be tied to anchor texts,
allowing students to learn through the analysis of published works, culminating in capstone
writing projects. Furthermore, in-class presentations will serve to reinforce their speaking and
listening skills, fostering a well-rounded communicative competence.
7th Grade Language Arts
The 7th Grade Language Arts program is designed to develop and integrate the skills of reading,
writing, listening, and speaking. Utilizing the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt text "Collections," the
course offers high-interest literature and informational selections across various genres, coupled
with systematic instruction in writing, grammar, usage, and vocabulary. Students will enjoy ample
opportunities for choice reading to foster a love for literature. Writing assignments will
encompass argumentative essays, narratives, and a research project, allowing students to
explore and express their ideas comprehensively. The curriculum is organized into thematic units
such as Bold Actions, The Creative World, Perception and Reality, and Guided by a Cause, each
designed to challenge and engage students in meaningful learning experiences.
8th Grade Language Arts
The 8th grade Language Arts course is a comprehensive exploration of reading, writing, listening,
and speaking, integrated into an engaging curriculum that spans across the year with projects in
research, literary analysis, and personal narrative writing. Emphasizing sentence structure,
grammar, usage, and vocabulary, this course dives into the study of poetry, historical fiction,
realistic fiction, and science fiction texts. Designed around thematic units such as culture and
belonging, approaching adulthood, and impacting the world, students will connect deeply with
the material, fostering a sense of empathy, understanding, and self-awareness. Through a blend
of interactive projects and literary exploration, students will develop critical thinking and effective
communication skills, preparing them for the complexities of the world around them.
