Theater Arts (semester)
Theater Arts, a one-semester elective for 7th and 8th graders, is an activity-based course. The
objectives are for students to gain knowledge and experience in performing and to improve
communication skills. The emphasis is on participation, individually and in groups. Students will create
and perform improvisations and scripted scenes applying the skills and knowledge gained in the course.
The students will participate in pantomimes; the use of voice, improvisations, extemporaneous activities,
and planned performances.

Yearbook (semester)
Eighth grade students have the opportunity to help record the history of Berkshire and Derby Middle
School by enrolling in the Yearbook class. Students enrolled in the Yearbook class will create the
Berkshire or Derby Yearbook from scratch. Yearbook will allow students to gain skills in areas such as
drawn and computerized page design and layout, digital and manual photography, copywriting, headline
creation, and caption writing. Students will receive the opportunity to work with many technological
programs using an online platform, and will learn to use programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe
Photoshop, and the Walsworth Yearbook Online Design program. Students will learn to apply the skills
learned pertaining to deadlines, creativity, and teamwork to their daily routines while creating a lasting
school history.
